After struggling to keep pace with fast-moving AI technology, the House has launched a bipartisan task force for artificial intelligence, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
The task force will explore how Congress can help America lead the way in Artificial Intelligence. They will also be dedicated to understanding and protecting society from the dangers of the new technology. The new territory has already been exploited by some. Using “deep fakes” to spread misinformation and cause harm. The task force will also focus on AI’s impact on the workforce.
Late, but Necessary
“Because advancements in artificial intelligence have the potential to rapidly transform our economy and our society, it is important for Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to understand and plan for both the promises and the complexities of this transformative technology,” Johnson said in a statement.
“As we look to the future, Congress must continue to encourage innovation and maintain our country’s competitive edge, protect our national security, and carefully consider what guardrails may be needed to ensure the development of safe and trustworthy technology.”
Jeffries added: “Congress has a responsibility to facilitate the promising breakthroughs that artificial intelligence can bring to fruition and ensure that everyday Americans benefit from these advancements in an equitable manner.”
Sharing Data and Organizing a Collective Approach
The task force will curate comprehensive reports on findings. They will be complete with guidelines, recommendations, and policy proposals.
It’s a 12-member task force, led by two members with extensive science backgrounds. Chairman Jay Olbernote (R-CA) and Co-Chairman Ted Lieu (D-CA). Olbernote has a Master’s degree in AI and owns a video game company while Lieu wrote last year’s bill to regulate AI, using Chat GPT.
